Problem

In 2022, the Early Literacy Policy team needed a faster, more flexible way to communicate the risk of insufficient literacy strategies seen across the nation. The team relied on an existing static report and the non-stop dedication of its Policy Fellows to tell the story. The team wanted an updated tool to supplement these efforts and digitally spread the message about the value children  reading before the end of third grade.

Action

We led an interactive discovery session to fully understand user needs, intended strategic use cases, key communication goals, and as result, crafted a user experience to resonate with legislators and key stakeholders. The policy content is robust and covers every state nationwide, requiring thoughtful information architecture, logic for relevant state data, custom illustration to connect policy work to people, and an interface design that guides users to important content while encouraging exploration for more details.

Result

The resulting website was successfully revealed by ExcelinEd’s Senior Policy Fellow at ExcelinEd’s 2022 National Summit. A fully-responsive site with a streamlined mobile experience, Literacy Matters provides the ExcelinEd team with a powerful, interactive map tool that clarifies the status of Early Literacy Policy across all 50 states. The site motivates legislators to better understand the policy opportunities and take action to ensure all students enter fourth grade with the reading skills they need to succeed.
