We collaborated with the Future of Privacy Forum to update their comprehensive ‘Spectrum of AI’ infographic, incorporating emerging trends like generative AI, reorganizing content for clarity, and creating a separate tool focused on AI in education.
Problem
The Future of Privacy Foundation, a longtime client, needed to update a previous project with us: a comprehensive visual overview of the different types of AI. While the original piece provided valuable insights, the fast-paced evolution of AI meant key sections had become outdated. The client also wanted to explore AI’s growing impact on education, prompting discussions about whether to shift the focus of the original piece or develop new content.
Action
We began by organizing virtual discovery workshops with the client. These sessions were designed to take a deep dive into the original piece, assessing what content remained relevant and which areas required updates. It was clear early on that while some foundational concepts still held value, many emerging AI trends — such as advancements in generative AI and its distinctions from predictive models — were missing and needed to be incorporated to provide a more holistic picture.
The initial plan was to refactor the original visual entirely around the application of AI in education. However, through discussion and iteration, a pivotal decision was made: the education-specific content warranted its own visual tool rather than being folded into the broader AI overview. This approach allowed us to maintain the depth and versatility of the original ‘Spectrum of AI’ piece while creating space for a separate, more targeted exploration of AI’s role in education.
Result
The new ‘Spectrum of AI’ visual successfully balances clarity and depth, making it a powerful tool for understanding AI’s evolving landscape. New distinctions, like generative vs. predictive AI, enhance its relevance and utility, while refined categories make the information easier to navigate. The education-focused AI piece went into development once the update was complete.
By maintaining the integrity of the original while incorporating significant new developments, the visual tool provides the Future of Privacy Foundation with an up-to-date resource for engaging and educating their audience — in a way that resonates with both technical and non-technical people. Plus, by choosing to create a separate AI in education piece, FPF will be able to better connect with that audience, and any other groups or industries it chooses to focus on.

Tremendousness has been a partner on several FPF projects—they’re great to work with if you want to capture and display complex issues.
